![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() See this post for more information on the history of hobbits, but basically his people lived east of the Misty Mountains, along the Anduin River. He was a hobbit, yes (one of the Stoors, to be more specific), but he never lived in the Shire. As time goes on, Gollum begins to see the ring as his master (and by extension, Sauron and ultimately Morgoth.) We also see this to a much lesser extent with Bilbo (when he goes all creepy on Frodo when he sees the ring in Rivendell), and Frodo (a bit towards the end.) I think, since Sauron was Morgoth’s second-in-command, and therefore anything Sauron does or makes is ultimately a product of Morgothism, that the physical changes we see in Gollum also follow this rule. Tolkien said that “ Any creature that took for Lord (and especially those who blasphemously called him Father or Creator) became soon corrupted in all parts of its being, the fea dragging down the hroa in its descent into Morgothism: hate and destruction.” (Fea being the spirit, and hroa the body.) After writing this post last week about the extremely different appearances of elves and orcs, though, I have a theory. I mean, we’re told that his mind and body were corrupted by the ring, but that’s about it. The specific hows and whys of the change in Gollum’s appearance are never really addressed. In this one I’ll talk about Gollum/Smeagol, and check back Friday for more information on the Shire. Okay, since these questions go in a couple different directions, I’m splitting the answer up into two posts. ![]()
